i — Grades versus stages
Cambridge uses qualifications rather than South African grades. Confirm whether the learner is in Lower Secondary, IGCSE, AS Level or A Level before planning support.
ii — The two-year exam structure
IGCSE is usually a two-year course. The syllabus may cover twenty-four months of content, with final external examinations written at the end of the programme.
iii — Core versus Extended
For IGCSE subjects, always confirm whether the learner is doing Core or Extended. Core is more limited in difficulty and usually caps the highest attainable grade; Extended is the full academic route.
iv — Cambridge terminology
- Syllabus document — the outline of tested content.
- Scheme of Work — a suggested teaching timeline or pacing plan.
